Job Title: Tax Preparers

Job Description: Tax preparers work for independent or franchised tax preparation services and sometimes for lawyers and accountants invloved in tax work. They use their knowledge of federal, state, and localtax codes toprepare tax returns and make sure their clients do not pay unnecessary taxes

Interests: Tax preparers should be interested in observing, information from all relevant source. They should like communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.

Tasks: They should check data input or verify totals on forms prepared by others to detect errors in arithmetic, data entry, or procedures. Also, they compute taxes owed or overpaid, using adding machines or personal computers, and complete entries on forms, following tax form instructions and tax tables. They have to interview clients to obtain information on taxable income and deductible expenses.

Skills Needed: They should be able to use mathematics to solve problems, understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents, give full attention to presenters and understand what they are saying, and be aware of the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.

Knowledge / Education Required: A taxpreparer should have knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, and banking. They should know the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning of specific words involved in the job. Tax preparers should also know laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, and executive orders.

Wages: The median salary is $32,000 per year.

Outlook: Ther is an estimate that in 2016 there will be 5,760 employed in NY. This represents a total of 110 job openings each year, starting from 2006.
